What is Americano coffee – history, taste and role in the world of specialty coffee

The origin of americano

Americano is a drink that came about almost by chance, and today it is one of the most frequently ordered ways of serving espresso. Its origins date back to World War II, when American soldiers stationed in Europe longed for coffee that reminded them of the coffee they knew back home – larger in volume, milder and less intense than the local espresso.

To achieve a similar effect, they began diluting Italian espresso with hot water. Thus americano was born, which despite appearances is not simply “weak coffee”, but a full-fledged drink with a thoughtful structure.

How is americano made?

A classic americano is prepared by combining a shot of espresso with hot water, most often in a ratio of 150 to 250 ml of water per double espresso. Unlike lungo – which involves a prolonged extraction of the same portion of coffee – americano does not change the brewing parameters of the espresso itself.

Thanks to this, the aromas are cleaner, and the drink retains its characteristic depth and structure, while offering a larger volume and a milder taste.

Flavor profile and sensory experience

Americano is much lighter in perception than espresso, but this does not mean that it is devoid of complexity. On the contrary: dilution allows you to better discover some flavor notes, especially in light-roasted coffees.

The drink can highlight fruitiness, sweetness, and delicate acidity, which may remain in the background in the intense form of espresso. Americano thus becomes a great choice for people who like black coffee but are looking for a drink with a more approachable intensity and greater clarity.

Americano vs. black filter coffee

Although americano and drip are often treated as similar drinks, in reality, they differ in terms of extraction, texture, and character. In drip, extraction occurs more slowly and using a filter, which gives a clean, light drink with high flavor clarity. Americano, on the other hand, is espresso “expanded” with water, so it has a different structure – slightly fuller, more oily, and at times aromatically more intense.

These two drinks can use the same coffee, but their final taste will be different, which makes them attractive to different tastes.

The role of americano in everyday coffee

Americano has become a synonym for black coffee in modern cafes. It is chosen both by people accustomed to a classic “cup of coffee” and by espresso lovers who want to prolong their pleasure. It is a universal drink – ideal both as a morning coffee and as a companion for work or a walk. In the world of specialty, americano additionally plays the role of an ambassador of bean quality: a milder form of brewed espresso allows you to better appreciate the character of a given origin, the roast level, or the coffee flavor profile.

Americano today – a classic in a new guise

Modern coffee culture has given americano a new dimension. It is no longer merely a compromise between the intensity of espresso and the volume of black coffee. It has become a conscious choice and a way to discover specialty coffees in an approachable form that is still full of character.

It is a drink that combines history, simplicity, and taste – remaining one of the most universal ways of drinking coffee in the world. And if you like to consciously experiment with the proportions of espresso and water, also check out why water with espresso is not just an addition and what the ritual of drinking espresso with or without water looks like.
